Varsity Basketball v Washington Montessori played on Wednesday December 17th, 2008

Game # 1 DDS vs. Washington Montessori

Dutchess Day Varsity Basketball loses their home opener 58-20

After a strong first quarter against WMS we were pretty even in score. Dutchess Day scored 10 points in the first quarter while only totaling 10 points the rest of the game. The second quarter WMS pulled away big with a 36 point lead. Washington Montessori's leading scorer R. Mennin had 20 points at the half and 30 in the game. The second half we changed defensive strategies and brought the game back to only 20 points. WMS just out hustled us and wanted to win. DDS felt that they were playing well in the beginning of the game but got discouraged by the point deficit. Kai was Dutchess Day's leading scorer with 8 points followed by Sean G. with 6 points which was made by two 3 point shots. Christian, Danielle and Roan all contributed 2 points each respectively. Danielle had a hard task by covering R. Mennin who was at least 4 inches taller than her.....she did a great job and was not intimidated at all. TJ, Sebastian, Jackson, John and Benjamin who also played to the best of their ability all got in the game to get some playing experience. Our next game will be after Christmas break and we plan as a team to improve game by game.

Squash Report v Westover on Wednesday December 17th, 2008

With sickness depleting our 14 strong squad, only 10 players made the one and a half hour journey to Westover in Connecticut. The journey was well worth it. Playing on some superb courts, we fought valiantly against Westover 3rd's. Our 5th grade beginners, Ellery, Henry, and Jack together with Hugo, were the first games on. Considering their lack of experience and young age compared with their opponents, they all played very well indeed. Hugo and Jack lost in 3 straight games but both got good points on the board against their opponents. Henry playing with much more confidence this time, narrowly lost the first two games, then won the third and finally lost the last game. It will not be long, however, until Henry gets his first victory. Ellery came even closer to winning her match, only losing out in a close five setter to a very strong opponent. With a little more practice on basic skills and a greater understanding of basic tactics, our younger players will improve tremendously! Apart from Lizzie, playing at #2 against arguably their best player, the rest of our team won their matches. Lizzie went down 3 games to 1, but played very well considering that, unlike the other team members, this was her first competitive game of the season. Alex at #5 is oozing confidence at the moment having discovered another racket sport that he is comfortable with. He dispatched his opponent with very little fuss in three short games. Andrew finally played to his potential, and despite dropping the third set, came through strongly. Denny and Hadley played very confidently this time and easily won their matches in three straight sets. This left Isabel to wrap up the tie, barely allowing her unfortunate opponent a point. We had time to play a few best of three games for our fifth grade beginners and Hugo and then make the long journey home. Thanks again to Sarah Stack for coming along to help coach and advise our players.

#1 Isabel Stack v Grace Buckles W 11-0, 11-4, 11-0
#2 Lizzie Quartararo v Bethaney Simmonds L 8-11, 4-11,11-8,3-11
#3 Hadley Stack v Sarah Kruger W 11-5,11-6,11-6

Results and report on squash game v Trinity Pawling played on Wednesday December 10th, 2008

With some of our squad unable to play, we took 11 enthusiastic players to the beautiful squash complex at Trinity Pawling School to play against their 3rds. (these are boys 9th grade and up who have not gained a place in the JV or Varsity teams). Some were as new to squash as some of our own players. Overall, the matches were played in excellent spirit and although we lost the majority of them, the players came away with a great sense of experience. Our 5th graders, Claudia, Henry, Ellery and Jack, were playing their first competitive match ever and all managed to secure points against their formidable opposition. Hugo and Andrew also found the going tough but tried hard to get points on the board. Alex too was up against strong opposition but after losing his first game by a narrow margin, he discovered the power of the drop shot and from then on never looked back, securing the next three games in fine fashion. Hanna, playing at # 4, came very close to winning her first game but then found the going harder as her opponent started to find a good length and finished strongly. Hanna, however, should be encouraged by the way she played. Denny, at # 3 played very well indeed and with her serve into the backhand corner doing alot of damage, she pushed her opponent to a 5 set match, only to lose the last game 10-12. With Lizzie out sick, Hadley had to step up to # 2. Her opponent was too strong for her, but she particularly played well in the 3rd game, narrowly losing it 11-13. Her serve was particularly useful in this game and she too should learn from this experience and should be encouraged by her performance. Finally, Isabel, playing at # 1, demonstrated why she is such a difficult player to beat. She polished off her opponent in three games, combining determination with a mix of accurate and powerful hitting. Overall, I was extremely pleased with how the DDS Squash team rose to the challenge. Well done every single player.

Results (DDS score first)
#1 - Isabel Stack v Skylar Weber 11-7, 11-3, 11-4 (DDS Win)
#2 - Hadley Stack v Jay Jung 2-11, 4-11, 11-13 (TP Win)
#3 - Denny Smythe v Tae Rang Kim 4-11, 11-7, 11-4, 7-11, 10-12 (TP Win)
#4 - Hanna Carlin v Jon Robideaux 9-11, 4-11, 4-11 (TP Win)
#5 - Andrew Colangelo v Wei Jiang 2-11, 5-11, 1-11 (TP Win)
#6 - Alex Quartararo v Greyson Bruwer 9-11, 11-5, 12-10, 11-5 (DDS Win)
#7 - Hugo Wassermannn v Jason Lee 6-11, 2-11, 2-11 (TP Win)

Report on final JV Soccer Game of the season on Thursday Nov 6th, 2008

The JV soccer Team finished their season with a fun game in the rain. The team lost to Rumsey 5 to 1 with Neil scoring on a penalty kick. The fun part was towards the end of the game when Rumsey played some of their younger players and DDS became competitive. The JV win loss recorder for the season was not the best but the players seemed to enjoy themselves and there was a great deal of individual improvement during the season. Many thanks to all the parents who provided snacks for the games and thanks for all the cheering support from the side lines. Our special team thanks goes to Mrs. Yager, our bus driver. Don't forget everyone is invited to join the fun on Wed. when the Varsity Team takes on the Staff/Parents Team; followed by Pizza.

Match Report for Varsity Soccer v Oakwood School on Friday Nov 7th, 2008

Although we won this game 4-3, it was probably our least impressive performance of the season. The field was poor and the opposition provided very little threat throughout the game. However, we failed to put passes together and lapsed back into "pin ball" soccer routines. We are a better team than this performance suggested. Chloe, Seb (2) and Andrew scored our goals which were all well taken. Andrew in particular, worked tirelessly in midfield and scored an excellent individual goal. Defensively, we were not at our best and gave our opponents far too much room to manouvre. Let's hope we can get it back together for our final game of the season at Kildonan School on Monday Nov 10th.

Report on Varsity game v Washington Montessori on Wed Nov 5, 2008

Thuis was really a game of "two halves" for us. In the first half we played some excellent soccer, in fact the best we have played all season. The score at half time was 2-1 to Wash Mont. We passed well, supported each other superbly, covered each other in defense and worked hard all round the field. Alexa and Chris were solid at the back and Jon and Nick covered very well indeed. In Midfield, Matt husled and bustled, Roan sprayed the passes and Isabel produced a hard working defensive and attacking display. Alex worked some good one twos on the wing and Jackson and Sebastian were firing in shots. Jackson indeed found the roof of the net with a bullet of a shot.
The second half promised much but with some extended pressure from Wash Mont paying off, we soon found ourselves 5-1 down with only 10 mins gone in the second half. After this, we lost a bit of heart but kept battling on with the final score reaching 7-1.Andrew came on and worked hard, Alex had a good chance and Jackson again went close. All in all, an encouraging game for the future!

JV Soccer Report v Washington Montessori on Monday November 3rd, 2008

The JV soccer team was defeated Monday by Wash. Mont. The final score was 4-1 with Jake scoring DDS only goal. The game was tied until about 8 minutes left when DDS ran out of steam and Wash Mont. scored three quick goals. Wash. Mont. is a fun team to play because both teams are the same age and size. This equality in the teams allows DDS to execute skills they have been practicing. Yesterday the offense was crossing the ball and playing give and go down the field. It was wonderful and many players had shots on goal because of it. Our only problem was our shoots were directly to the goal keeper. Our last game is against Rumsey at Rumsey this Thursday.

Varsity Soccer Game v Trinity Pawling on Thursday October 30th, 2008

We lost the game 5-0 but all in all, this was one of our best performances of the season. Playing against a generally older and stronger group of boys, we had a terrific first half and although we were three down at the break, we did have chances to score but found that our finishing was once more wanting. Goals just seem very hard to come by for this team this year! Whilst we were defending stoutly with Alexa and Isabel forming the strength in the middle and Chris, Jon and Ellie providing full back support, our midfield was creating some good balls for our forwards. Roan, Andrew and Matt worked hard in midfield and forwards, Alex, Sebastian, Eddie ans Jackson were all looking for runs to make at goal. Still, again the ball did not fall for us and precious chances were wasted. In the second half, playing with the wind, we did not make the most of our opportunities, and team morale dropped a little when we leaked another goal. If we are to finish the season on a high, we will need to start hitting the back of the net more consistently!Next game Washington Montessori away on Wed Nov 5th.

Varsity Soccer Game v Steiner School on Wednesday October 29th, 2008

This was a very difficult day to play soccer. The weather was freezing, the referee failed to show and the DDS team were without a coach for the entire game as "someone who knew what they were doing had to referee!" Having said all this, the DDS team fought bravely against a team that had some very talented players. Although we failed to score, there was some very good passing moves, particularly out on the left flank with Alex and Sean working well together. At the back we defended strongly, but were unable to cut out some fine individual runs that some Steiner players were making. Danielle had a fine game in goal and came out in the second half to run the midfield. In the second half, our team lost their way a bit and the forwards saw very little of the ball. Isabel, once more playing very strongly in midfield was our best player in this game. The final score was 4-0 to Steiner.

JV Soccer v Rumsey School on Friday October 24th, 2008

DDS's JV Soccer Team was defeated by Rumsey on Friday 8-1. The score does not do justice to the great game the team played. Jake scored the lone goal on a break away in the first half. Ben, Caterina, Neil, Carter and Jake had opportunities to score and just fell short. Rumsey, a physically larger, more skilled and 98% boys' team kept us in check. Defensively DDS played very aggressively against the size odds. Henry had some amazing saves in goal and Hannah and Jason played their best game ever. During the high fives between the teams at the conclusion of the game a very large Rumsey player apologized to Chelsea for "taking her out". See you today at home against Poughkeepsie Day.

Varsity Soccer match report v Poughkeepsie Day School on Thursday October 23rd, 2008

The final result of P. Day 5 DDS 0 does not truly reflect a game that was in effect a much more even affair. In terms of chances created on goal, DDS did not lag too far behind. Admittedly, P.Day had some fine young players who constantly threatened our goal but we too had shots on goal denied by some some erratic shooting and a very alert goalkeeper. The first half score of 2-0 did flatter our opponents. Andrew, Jackson and Isabel all went close with chances. We passed well, picking out our forwards frequently to receive the ball. Matt was a dynamo in the first half and he was well supported by Ellie who worked extremely hard as usual in midfield and at the back. Our 6th graders were the real stars of this game for us. Nick had his best game of the season and at times the interpassing skills of Alex, Andrew and Sean were a joy to watch. Danielle again had a terrific game in goal in the first half and once again came out full of enthusiasm for her forward role in the second half. In defense, Alexa covered very well and Jon worked hard getting back to deny their best player room to run on the right wing. Chris was again strong in defense, although he does need to learn a little more positional discipline. Paige and Maddy also made significant contributions to the game. Up front, Sebastian tried hard to find a way through to goal. Chloe too is developing her positional play and is becoming much more involved in attacks on goal. Overal, I was pleased with this performance and look forward to our next game against Steiner on Wednesday October 29th.

Varsity Soccer Game v Mizzentop (A) on Monday October 20th

The score was 8-2 to Mizzentop. While this game did not reflect our best efforts this season, their was some marked improvements in some aspects of our play. Our passing was indeed much better and indeed this helped to create far more opportunities for our forwards. Sebastian did score two very good goals but we deserved far more from our efforts. Defensively, we were not on top of our game. Positioning in defense and midfield left much to be desired and we were often caught marking opposing players on the wrong side of goal. As a result, we let in alot of very soft goals. Danielle battled bravely in goal throughout the game. Our best player was in fact Isabel who played exceptionally well in this game. Our forward line with Andrew, Alex, Jackson, Sean and Chloe threatened the whole game but final passes went astray far too often when we really should have scored. Overall, some encouraging things happened but we definitely need to work on defense this week!

JV Soccer Game v Melrose on Monday October 20th, 2008

The JV Soccer Team defeated Melrose Monday afternoon at DDS 3 - 0. The team came out strong and Anna Meyers put Jake Bhangdia's corner kick into the cage early in the first half. Jake scored the second goal off a nice little cross pass from Anna. The third goal came in the second half. Unassisted, Jake fired in a long ball to the far upright corner. Henry Thomas and Nick Akst shared time in the cage. Both boys played solid goal tending making some excellent saves. Carter Melledo, Alex Chalk, and David Akst were outstanding defensively. The team has been working on positioning and teamwork and it's beginning to work for them. The next game is friday at home against Rumsey.

Billy Goat Run at Baird Park on Sunday October 19th, 2008 - DDS Cross Country Team Nails It!

Varsity Soccer match report v Melrose on Wednesday October 15th

How sweet our first win of the season was!...and we did it in style winning 5 goals to 1 against a weaker but energetic Melrose team. The goals in this game were slow to come and the teams were only separated at half time by a well taken goal by Chloe who was alert to her opportunity. Still, things looked good as we dominated the play in that half. At the back, Alexa playing in a sweeper role looked composed and efficient with Chris moving forward confidently to engage the Melrose attack. This was a better game for our passing, although we still need to get the play out wide much more. In the second half, the goals started to come with eighth graders, Jackson, Sebastian and Danielle all latching on to through balls and confidently slotting home with well placed shots! Andrew Colangelo scored his first varsity goal in fine style too. Our forwards were much more lively in this game and were well supported by the midfield. Ellie again worked hard in midfield along with Maddy, Eddie and Roan.In defense, Isabel, Sawyer, Jon and Paige kept goalside and did well to help prevent Melrose attacks. Overall, this was very encouraging. Let's hope we can keep the momentum going!
