DDS Squash Team looks forward to a great season

The 2006/2007 winter sports season saw the formation of the first Dutchess Day School Squash Team. This year, nine players are returning to play and we welcome two newcomers to our ranks. Sarah Anthony, Lucy Roemer, Caleb Tuke, Zoe Wilson,Kayleigh Bhangdia, Hanna Carlin, Isabel and Hadley Stack and Denny Smythe are going for their second season with Hugo Wasserman and Elizabeth Quartararo joining them to make a formidable team this year. Thanks to the generosity of Millbrook School, we will be using their courts at least twice a week with possibly one weekly visit to Vassar College. We also have a schedule of three matches to be played against Indian Mountain School at Millbrook School courts. The dates of these are as follows:
1) Wednesday December 5th @ Millbrook School starting at 3:30 p.m.
2) Wednesday January 16th @ Millbrook School starting at 3:30 p.m.
3) Wednesday February 13th @ Millbrook School starting at 3:30 p.m.

Further matches should hopefully be possible against Millbrook School Thirds (recreational but older players)

All in all we are looking forward to an exciting season...and remember squash players....to the left, to the left, everything you own in a box to the left!!

JV Soccer Report for away game v Poughkeepsie Day School on Monday October 29th

DDS's Junior Varsity Soccer Team tied Poughkeepsie Day School on Monday, 1-1. Isabel worked the ball through the middle of the field and passed off to Alex who found the net late in the second half. PDS had scored earlier on in the half and then both teams settled into an evenly played match. DDS came out strong in the second half and had at least a dozen opportunities to score but we just couldn't seem to finish. Alex and Andrew took turns as the keeper. Alex had a few nice saves but Andrew wasn't tested as DDS's defense played a solid second half.
Parents please remind your children that we have an away game on Thurs. It is a long bus ride to Steiner and the players have been asked not to bring their backpacks on the bus if they are riding the bus home. Room on the small buses is very tight. Thank you. No practice Wednesday. Everyone have a safe and fun halloween.

Varsity Soccer v Poughkeepsie Day School on Thursday October 25th

Poughkeepsie Day School gave our team the toughest challenge yet and it was only in the last few minutes of the game that Hudson waltzed in to the opposing team's area with the ball at his feet and coolly slotted the winning goal past a bewildered goalkeeper. The score now at 3-2 in Dutchess Day School's favor was to remain the final score.
We started the game very brightly and Kayleigh was creating havoc on the right flank. Time and time again she crossed the ball only for the Poughkeepsie goalkeeper to pluck gratefully out of the air. Those balls that eluded his clutching hands seemed to stay miraculously away from our eager forwards. Both Caleb and Sebastian were constantly frustrated as the ball passed tantalizingly close!
Our first goal was the result of a handball in the penalty area and Griffin stepped up to dispatch the ball low to the keeper's left....1-0! Immediately, Poughkeepsie responded and from a direct free kick floated the ball through Danielle's outstretched hands... 1-1! Soon after, we were 2-1 down as a resurgent Poughkeepsie team capitalized on some unusual sloppy defending on our part. Overall though, Roan, Christian,Golf, Alexa and Jon had very good games.
Not before too long, we were level with Sebastian turning on the ball to score a nice goal in off the far post. Cooper buzzed workmanlike in midfield with Griffin continuing to look for the opportunity to unleash one of his blockbusting shots at goal. However, it was left to Hudson's impressive coolness to seal the victory for DDS. Our next game is one week away on Thursday November 1st against Steiner School.

JV Soccer v Melrose on Monday October 22nd

The JV Soccer Team added another tally to their win column defeating
Melrose this past Monday, 4-2. Alex and Andrew again shared the goalkeeping responsibilities and both boys played strong. Andrew had an exceptional day on the field also, as he scored twice with assists going to Christian
and Caitlin. Sean scored with a little help from Alex, and Taylor put a
penalty kick into the cage. Many thanks to Coach B for taking over the
coaching duties. Nice job team. Remember that the Rumsey game has been
moved to a home game on Friday Nov 9th, after which we'll have a little
pizza celebration party. Also there will be no field practice for the JV
team on Thursday Nov. 8. The staff/parents team is scheduled to take on the
Varsity Soccer team that afternoon and the JV players should plan on supporting the team of their choice that afternoon. The JV Team will be traveling to Poughkeepsie Day on Monday, Oct. 29th. See you there.

Field Hockey Report v Rumsy School on Thursday October 18th

The Dutchess Day School field hockey team remains undefeated after another well-earned win last week against Rumsey. The Lady Tigers walked away with a strong 7-0 win. Lizzy Quartararo and Sarah Anthony put two shots each past Rumsey's goalie, while Lucy Roemer, Zoe Wilson and Gracie Howland added one goal each. Delaney Bailey played an exceptional game up at the front line. Claire Shoppe and Denny Smythe also dominated at midfield. Dutchess Day's goalie, Hanna Carlin, has proven to be the Tiger's backbone as she has yet to be scored on this season! Our next game is home on Wednesday, October 24. We hope to see you all there while we take on Maplebrook for the second time this season. HOO-RAH!!

Varsity Soccer v Mizzentop on Friday October 19th

Although the game finished in a rainstorm, the weather for the most part was very amenable. Mizzentop started the game in lively fashion and were rewarded with an unstoppable shot by their best player, no. 11, who sent the ball rocketing in to our net. DDS responded immediately with a superbly taken goal by Hudson, starting the game in the unfamiliar role of center forward. The goal resulted after good work from Cooper who played his best game of the season so far. In fact it was pressure from Cooper that led to our second goal, an unfortunate header by a Mizzentop defender into his own net. Sebastian and Jackson, coming into the attack, both scored excellent goals to give us a 4-1 lead at the half. Jackson's goal in particular will be remembered for it's ferocity, being belted with his right foot, one touch, in to the roof of the Mizzentop net. In defense, a change meant Roan moving in to midfield and Griffin playing the role of sweeper. Griffin did this so well that it brought back memories of the great Franz Beckenbauer confidently controlling the game from the back of defense. In the second half, we started to lose concentration and Mizzentop scored two quick goals to bring the score to 4-3 in our favor. Fortunately, the ship was steadied and another goal by Sebastian was steered confidently in to the net. Caleb, still searching for his first goal of the season, also came close but was denied by alert defending. Golf and Alexa also stood out at the back for their solid and determined defending. Overall, another terrific performance!! Next week's game is on Thursday away at Poughkeepsie Day School. Parents, keep that superb support going!

JV Soccer v Rumsey School on Thursday October 18th

The JV Soccer Team played their best game to date against Rumsey on Thursday
afternoon. The final score of 4-1 in favor of Rumsey doesn't tell the whole
story. Rumsey scored two excellent goals in the first half and two more that were definitely on the fortunate side. Rumsey is a very talented team and DDS stepped up to their level and played excellent soccer. The forwards and midfielders put together some great passes and had a number of good shots on goal during the first half. Andrew and Christian teamed up on one such play with Christian finding the net. During the second half of play, DDS tightened their defense and Alex had an excellent half in goal. The team started to crowd in the center of the field, but their determination to hold Rumsey scoreless in the second half was successful. Way to go JV!
Our next game is at Melrose on Monday.

Report on DDS Varsity Soccer v Melrose on Monday October 15th

Another very competent performance by the DDS Varsity Soccer team meant a comfortable home 7-2 victory over a spirited Melrose team. The game started very much in our favor with Kayleigh and Griffen both scoring during a sustained bout of DDS pressure. Melrose tried gamely to reduce the deficit and were rewarded with a penalty which unfortunately crashed against the bar and was cleared by relieved DDS defenders. At first the DDS defense were feeling the tension of the game and the ball at times was zinging around our penalty area with no one able to put their foot on the ball and slow it down. Gradually heads began to look up and more control of the ball was in evidence as passes started to hit their target. Sebastian came on late into the half, and not for the first time, scored with his first touch of the game. Probably the most unfortunate player not to hit the back of the net was Hudson who found frequent goal scoring positions but was just unable to get enough power or angle on the ball to get it past the Melrose keeper. However all credit to him and frequent providers Griffin and Kayleigh for their persistent play. At the back, Danielle was having her usual solid game in goal and defenders Golf, Austin, Christian, Roan, Alexa and Jon were harassing and chasing the opposition offense who were constantly seeking a way through our defense.
The second half saw Dutchess Day push continuously into the Melrose half of the field. Another goal by Sebastian put us firmly in the driving seat. Melrose got one back, Kayleigh restored our lead only for Melrose to hit another to make the score 5-2. DDS were not finished yet. Midfield players Caleb and Cooper kept the engines running, Matt was performing the occasional heroics in goal and forwards Jackson and Adrienne were keenly setting up more chances on goal. Danielle, now at center forward, slotted in another goal with team sweeper, Roan, moving fluidly in midfield finishing off a great pass from Caleb, with an accurate shot into the Melrose net. The jubilant Roan was particularly ecstatic as he had scored with his unfashionable right foot. Although we still have much to work on, this was another pleasing performance. Our next game is against Mizzentop at home on Friday October 19th starting at 3:45 p.m. Come along and support!

DDS Field Hockey Report v Mizzentop on Friday October 12th

The Dutchess Day School field hockey team battled for 60 minutes straight last week in their game against Mizzentop; unfortunately both teams walked off the field scoreless. Dutchess Day's goalie, Hanna Carlin, has continued to shut down any and every shot taken. The lady Tigers fought until the final whistle was blown. We have another shot against Mizzentop and hope to see you all there! Come on out on Thursday when we take on Rumsey! HOO-RAH!

Plea for Field hockey photos

I am wondering when I am going to receive the first accusation of giving the field hockey team less coverage than the soccer teams! I am trying not to do that but to date I have received no photos from field hockey parents to put on the blog. The team reports are edited and put on the blog very shortly after I receive them. Please. please field hockey parents, send me some photos and I will get them on the blog and indeed on the noticeboard at school too, as soon as I receve them!

JV Soccer Report v Indian Mountain @ home on Friday October 12th

The JV Soccer Team met IMS for the second time this year and defeated them 5-2. Andrew and Alex split the time in the goal cage and each player only allowed one goal. Offensively in the first half, Alex assisted in 2 goals. He passed a great ball to Christian who scored and a short time later he passed off to Isabel who put her shot away. Chloe found the goal cage after dribbling through the defense and later passed off to Christian who tallied his second score of the game. The remaining goal was scored by Andrew after Isabel started the play from mid field. The defense continues to play strong and the fifth grade girls; Caitlin, Chelsea, Erica, and Hannah did an excellent job playing some new positions during the game. Sean showed great aggressive hustle during the second half, putting the ball in the cage after an IMS goal kick. Unfortunately the ball never crossed the line of the 18 yard box. In the last game, Andrew did the same thing. Great offensive play by both boys but the rule of the game is that on a goal kick the ball must clear the 18 yard box before either team can touch it. If the ball doesn't clear the box it's a re-kick. We are learning this rule ......the hard way! Next game is at home against Rumsey on Thursday October 18th. See you Coach R
