On Wednesday, January 9, the JV basketball team traveled to Rumsey School for its first away game. The power outage which delayed the beginning of the game did nothing to short-circuit the energy and spark of any of the 12 JV basketball players. This was an intense defensive battle.
Some of the highlights included Nick Akst leading the team in rebounds and scoring by snagging many offensive rebounds and easily scoring several baskets. After falling behind early, 6 – 0, Nick’s baskets and our suffocating defense and fast break baskets by David Akst, Sebastian Barry and Jon Hill enabled us to catch up to Rumsey as we matched Rumsey score for score. Late in the first half, Sean Gorwara, sent a high arching set shot from the right-hand corner for our first three-pointer of the season – nothing but net too.
In the second half, we fell behind again, but tied the score with a clutch free-throw by Taylor Digilio, 14 – 14. A steal by Bernadette Winby and a beautiful feed from Alex Quartararo to David Akst for another basket kept us in the game. TJ Sayah, Maggie Dull and Nick Salnikoff frustrated Rumsey with tight defense and Matt Pelletier’s savvy ball-handling kept the game flowing offensively.
In the end, Rumsey hit two rim-rattling set shots late in the game which we could not match even though both Sebastian and Sean has two shots flirt with the net only to slide painfully to the wrong side of the iron. The final score was Rumsey Blue Dogs - 22, Dutchess Day Tigers – 18.
Each one of the JV 12 put their hearts on the line for this fever-pitched contest – it was definitely exciting.
