VARSITY BASKETBALL WINS AT HOME-DDS-28-MIZZENTOP-23

The varsity basketball team put its perfect record on the line and came away with an exciting victory against the visiting Mizzentop hoopsters on Wednesday afternoon. The fast paced game was exciting and the entire team had a hand in the outcome. The scoring was evenly distributed amongst the players, with three boys making their first baskets as varsity players.
Matthew Stapylton played a great game at both ends of the court, grabbing several rebounds with terrific positioning under the boards and scoring a basket for the cause. I was very proud of Matt’s performance in this game. He has shown consistent improvement in practice and a real desire to become a better player. Matt has also taken total responsibility for himself, accepts constructive input well and has really grown as a player and a teammate. It is great to see him contributing to the team’s success. Great job Matt, keep up the good work.
Joining Matt with their first varsity baskets of the year were Roan Gideon and Shriman Bala. Congratulations guys. I foresee many more points from both of you in future games. Roan and Christian showed their usual hustle on defense, causing many jump balls and fast break opportunities for the team. This DDS basketball team is not afraid to get a few floor burns hustling for a loose ball.
Tri–captains Griffin Wilson, Hudson Kuras, and Adam Baker added 6, 8, and 8 points respectively and were an integral part of an effective fast break. The entire team is really improving when it comes to filling the lanes and finishing off their layups. They are beginning to understand the effectiveness of a well run and aggressive fast break opportunity. Guards Austin Christensen, Cooper Davis, and Ben Pohulchuk saw some serious playing time and showed greater confidence and poise under the pressure defense that Mizzentop was showing throughout the game. Austin made some strong moves to the iron and is so close to becoming a consistent scorer. It is great to see him gaining confidence in himself. Cooper seems to be all over the court, causing problems for any player he is guarding. Ben got a chance to see the pressure that a point guard is under for most of the game and is showing steady improvement as the year progresses.
The team will defend its 5 and 0 record on Monday, February 4, against Washington Montessori School. I hope you will be able to come out and see these young athletes in action.

JV Basketball game v Melrose on Wednesday January 30th, 2008

The final score of 33-15 to Melrose reflected the number of opportunities that each side carved out shooting chances. Although we worked hard in defense, and forced the Melrose players to move the ball around, we found it hard to gather rebound to the benefit of one very capable, tall Melrose forward. Nick A., Maggie, Nick S. and Sebastian worked very hard under the basket and did well to squeeze the Melrose forwards out at times. Going forward, we made some very good scores, and for a while, even up to half time, Melrose's lead was relatively small. However, we were often caught in possesion, with the Melrose defense putting fairly strong pressure on our ball carriers. Taylor, Sean and Alex moved fluidly around the court and set up some good shooting opportunities, although most were a result of a one pass situation. We really needed to look up and move the ball about more if we were to increase our scoring opportunities. TJ found some good positions in particular but could not always get his shot off. When Jon and Bernadette came off the bench, they worked hard to support both offense and defense. Overall, it was a great effort by our JV Tigers!

VARSITY BBALL WINS ON THE ROAD - Report by Coach Ouellette

The DDS Varsity basketball team traveled to Poughkeepsie Day School on Thursday afternoon for their annual meeting and boy did an exciting game break out. DDS came away with an incredibly hard-fought victory, (DDS-30 and PDS-25) with everyone contributing to our team’s success.
Tri-captain’s Griffin Wilson, (20 points), Hudson Kuras, (8 points), and Adam Baker, (2 points), accounted for all our scoring but that is not where the story lies. Overall, we had a very cold shooting day, both from the perimeter and in the paint. I could say with reasonable confidence that we could have scored 50 points with all the missed fast break layups and long distance rim shots, but like any coach would say, “That happens during the season and I am grateful for the win”.
The real story of this game is the bus trip to the game and the never “give-up” attitude of our kids on the court. I always start the bus trip off with a big hello to our driver, a little snack, a short talk and then some free time to do whatever they would like while traveling to the game. About 15 minutes from the visitor’s school we have a little “prep” talk. We discuss our strategy, including our offensive and defensive plans for this particular opponent. We did all that, but something was very different this year. During the free time, the team was busy studying their playbooks, discussing their different responsibilities on each play, helping those who were absent with some new twists I incorporated, and all were firmly focused on basketball. It was a pleasure to ease drop on them, as they made me very proud of their attitudes about and commitment to this game I truly love.
What else stood out was there interaction with each other. There was nothing but positive, genuine respect for each other, patience with each other’s questions, and a team spirit that was infectious. Danielle was busy listening to the discussions, but was sketching on her pad. Griffin looked over and complimented her on her drawings. It was genuine and beautiful to witness. Hudson was his usual gregarious self, adding his infectious, up-tempo personality to the mix. As I wrapped Shriman’s ankle in the back of the bus, our birthday boy was anxious to score his first points on his special day. It wasn’t to be, but the anticipation was fantastic. Cooper added his usual clever repartee to the mix, while Adam quietly advised the younger players and answered their specific questions. Austin, just off a great practice the day before, was anticipating a continuation of his outstanding play.
Yes, we won the game and stayed undefeated. We are very proud of that achievement. It wasn’t a pretty win, it wasn’t our usual solid performance, but it was another wonderful learning experience. We brought all of our offensive and defensive “weapons” with us, but they were a bit rusty and needed some polishing. So instead of conceding anything to our opponent, we buckled down and played better defense, we fought for better position under the boards, we encouraged our teammates from the bench, we showed good bench discipline, and we came away with a victory. We could have easily given up on this game, but we didn’t. We dug deep and found another way to win, a way that doesn’t show up in any box score, but makes a coach very proud. We used a very tried and true method to win this game. Good old fashioned hard work! As a team, a cohesive unit, we worked extremely hard from the tip-off of the ball until the final buzzer. We never gave up. I am so proud of our young, student-athletes.

Squash v Westover School (Away) on Wednesday January 23rd 2008

In terms of a result, we lost the the match 9 to 1. However, when all is said and done, it has to be known that all the DDS players played remarkably well considering the difference in age and experience between the two teams. This was not a high school "Thirds" team, but a High School Junior Varsity team that play matches twice a week against other High School teams. In terms of valuable experience, this match was terrific. Kayleigh Bhangdia did pull off the only upset of the afternoon with a gritty display of athleticism and varied stroke play. On January 13th, we will re-visit Westover and play their "Thirds" team which I am assured will be a more even match. One thing I have to say, is that our team learned the protocols associated with playing a competitive game at High School level!

DDS Varsity Basketball v Trinity Pawling on Wednesday January 16th - Report by Coach Ouellette

DDS Varsity Basketball Team makes it Three in a Row –DDS-43 Trinity Pawling -32
Trinity Pawling visited DDS on Thursday and brought some talented players to test our veteran team. DDS came out focused, determined and ready to play. The team has been studying and practicing their new sets of plays and it looks like their hard work is paying off. Point guard Griffin Wilson had a tremendous game scoring a DDS career high 29 points and leading the Tigers with precision and confidence. The TP coach told me after the game that Griffin was a terrific point guard. Great job Griffin.
Hudson Kuras and Adam Baker had their hands full on defense with some very good TP players. Adam rose to the occasion defending a larger player, and held his own with good positioning and his usual stalwart determination. Hudson had a very quick point guard to contend with the entire game but he too showed his usual tenacious and tireless defense. Adam added 4 points while Hudson scored 8. Both players were also complimented by the TP coach for their fine play. That is quite an honor when the opposing coach takes the time to compliment our players after the game. Congrats to Hudson and Adam.
DDS employed a tight 2-3 zone defense to clog the middle with Danielle Stamer and Shriman Baba playing their usual and consistent tough defense. Dani added 2 points for the cause. Defense never shows up in the box score but without Dani and Shriman’s unselfish defensive play, the score would certainly have been closer.
Eighth grade super sub Cooper Davis added his usually energetic mix to the team. Cooper is the kind of player that every coach loves to have on his team. No matter what he is doing he does it with great enthusiasm and always for the good of the team. He always keeps me up-to-date on how much time is left, when it is time to press, and who has too many fouls. Just one more thing that doesn’t show up in the box score.
Jackson, Ben, Matthew, Christian and Roan got a chance to feel the pressure of a full court press and learned a great deal about ball control, team communications, and situational awareness. Jackson Ryan showed greatly improved knowledge of his playbook and set some very strong picks for his teammates. It was a great learning experience for our younger players, who are continually working hard and making more and more significant contributions to this very special DDS basketball team. Hurricane DDS has now reached Category II strength and is headed for their next game with Poughkeepsie Day School on Thursday, January 24th. The game is away and starts at 3:30. Please come out and support your DDS Tigers.

DDS Squash Team show improvement with fine wins against IMS and Millbrook School

Losing only a total of four matches, the Dutchess Day School Squash team played superbly well against older and in many cases more experienced opposition. Millbrook to be fair put out a weaker team than last time, but the way our players performed was exceptional and it is clear that they are all learning tremendously fast. Lucy, playing at #1 found the going tough against both IMS and Millbrook opponents. The Millbrook game was particularly close. Isabel won both her games at #2 but was pushed to a close 3 setter by her IMS opponent. Sarah, at #3, cruised in with two comfortable wins, while Caleb at #4 took some time getting in to his stride, losing badly to Millbrook but coming back to almost push his IMS opponent to a third game. Zoe (#5) played well with mixed fortunes. She beat her Millbrook opponent comfortably giving up only two points but then met her match with IMS, losing both games 5 and 4. Hadley at #6 demonstrated how much she has improved with wins against both schools. She played very well indeed and deserved her success! Millbrook were unable to put out more than 6 players, but the rest of the DDS team showed their metal against IMS. At #7, Lizzie won both games easily. Kayleigh at #8 also polished off her opponent with ease, and without dropping a point! Denny (#9), Hanna (#10), Andrew (#11) and Hugo (#12) all won their games against IMS in fine style. Hugo and Andrew were playing their first competitive games for DDS and both rose tremendously to the occasion. Below are posted the full results:

Varsity Volleyball game v Rumsey School on Wed Jan 9th - Report by Ms Schoch

The Dutchess Day School varsity volleyball team began their regular season with a solid 3-0 win over Rumsey. Serving was crucial, at this point in the season, and several players stepped up with consistent and well-placed serves. Co-captains Adrienne Sieverding and Claire Shope led the attack, with Christy Agrawal and Eddie Castillo contributing to the Tiger offense as well. Alexa Colangelo played a great defensive game, and Paige Reifler came up from the junior varsity to help the Tigers to their first win of the season. It was an exciting beginning, and the team invites everyone to come and watch its games during the season. Please see the sports calendar for the schedule. Also, the team has added a game on January 23rd, with Westover, at Westover. Look for details to come.

JV Basketball v Rumsey School on Wednesday Jan 9th 2008

On Wednesday, January 9, the JV basketball team traveled to Rumsey School for its first away game. The power outage which delayed the beginning of the game did nothing to short-circuit the energy and spark of any of the 12 JV basketball players. This was an intense defensive battle.

Some of the highlights included Nick Akst leading the team in rebounds and scoring by snagging many offensive rebounds and easily scoring several baskets. After falling behind early, 6 – 0, Nick’s baskets and our suffocating defense and fast break baskets by David Akst, Sebastian Barry and Jon Hill enabled us to catch up to Rumsey as we matched Rumsey score for score. Late in the first half, Sean Gorwara, sent a high arching set shot from the right-hand corner for our first three-pointer of the season – nothing but net too.

In the second half, we fell behind again, but tied the score with a clutch free-throw by Taylor Digilio, 14 – 14. A steal by Bernadette Winby and a beautiful feed from Alex Quartararo to David Akst for another basket kept us in the game. TJ Sayah, Maggie Dull and Nick Salnikoff frustrated Rumsey with tight defense and Matt Pelletier’s savvy ball-handling kept the game flowing offensively.

In the end, Rumsey hit two rim-rattling set shots late in the game which we could not match even though both Sebastian and Sean has two shots flirt with the net only to slide painfully to the wrong side of the iron. The final score was Rumsey Blue Dogs - 22, Dutchess Day Tigers – 18.

Each one of the JV 12 put their hearts on the line for this fever-pitched contest – it was definitely exciting.
